"Hayden is the rare instructor who brings a wealth of real world experience to an academic environment in a way that is both relevant and inspiring."

"He constantly pushes his students to succeed."

    "Worth every penny of tuition."

  • "Empowering the children of our communities, and providing them with important tools and critical life skills that are applicable everywhere."

Hayden offers workshops in film-making and production, from script-writing, pre-production, production, lighting, editing and even art direction. Hayden's classes provide more than just a learning experience, and give the student an opportunity to discover his/her often concealed talent.

The process of movie-making can be a life changing experience. It provides an opportunity for the individual to build confidence in oneself by developing critical life skills such as the ability to communicate, adapting to change, problem solving, completing tasks that may seems impossible at first, learning to collaborate, and most importantly making life long associations and friends.

Both Hayden’s love of teaching and many years of experience in the motion picture business in Los Angeles has given him a unique ability to provide the student with both a realistic and experiential look at the film business.

Students describe him as being “creative, patient, knowledgeable, experienced, respectful, detail-oriented, modest, and most of all, a very open minded instructor.” Another writes, One of the impressive qualities that I admire about him is his infinite ability to inspire people.” As one colleague writes, “Hayden has somehow managed to cheat time, to maintain the idealism of his youth and temper it with the demands of a very practical world. He is a constant reminder to students (and peers) to hold onto the things that mean the most to us, to never forget our dreams.

Hayden comes with over 25 years experience as a filmmaker and teacher. He began his documentary film career in Paris, than moved to Los Angeles to continue his professional life in film-making. Aside from directing his own projects, he has also worked on feature films and commercials for directors like Alan Van Rijn, Katt Shea, Alex Proyas and Ridley Scott. Other professional work in production, include production design, editing, production, decoration, set design and props. Hayden is producer and director of a feature length documentary entitled

    A Force in Nature.

    Young Filmmaker's Summer Camp

Students work in teams to complete a short film. They develop a story idea, write a script, pre-visualize it, produce and finally edit their project.

Through the course, students are exposed to cameras and movie equipment and walk away understanding the visual elements and practical tools necessary to make a visual narrative. Students also realize the importance of team work and creative collaboration, which is a critical part that goes into making movies.

Each week day is split between in-class instruction and on-set production.
Students apply the lessons learned directly to the films they are making.
Students receive a digital copy of their film.

  • Testimonials

I can't elaborate passionately in words how much I learned about filmmaking and photography from this extremely knowledgable human being. Everything from the baby steps of pre-production to the fundamental aspects of framing/lighting scenes in production, and the true method of storytelling in post production inside the editor has been forever impacted by Hayden Maisoneuve Yates. I strongly recommend signing up for this course if you have a true desire to tell stories via motion picture. He's a shining example of a teacher, mentor, friend, and overall human being. His ability to facilitate real world examples of filmmaking is beyond valuable to anyone pursuing a career in this industry.

Nicolas Luna - Freelance Videographer, Audio Technician, & Graphic Designer

Hayden Yates is by far one of the best teachers that I have ever had in my lifetime. He was very encouraging while still challenging me as a student. The world needs more teachers like Mr. Yates, he changed my life. (Student)

Honoria Starbuck - Professor Art Institute of Austin

I have worked with Hayden for several years on the faculty of the Art Institute of Austin. He is an expert in art history and contemporary art and video. His videos are rich with respect for subjects and profound in their storytelling. Hayden is a natural and generous teacher with a knack for connecting to students in ways that engage them to seek higher achievements. Hayden holds regular salons that bring together students, alumni, and faculty in intellectual exchanges to share insights into individual production as well as new work in the world. He has also created a film festival for student work that brings together diverse disciplines in our school to produce and celebrate original work. Hayden is an active artist, a global citizen, a sincere explorer in the realm of creativity, and a warm, caring human being. I recommend Hayden for any position dealing with intense meaningful creative output, education of creatives, or for positions of leadership that demand optimizing teams of diverse talents to work together. (Honoria worked directly with Hayden at The Art Institute of Austin)

Adam Roberts - Creative Czar at adamrobertsstudio

Hayden is a fantastic instructor, and I was privileged to soak in his knowledge while I was a student at the Art Institute of Austin. Hayden's extensive experience in the film industry and his love of the medium shine through in everything he does, and he easily transfers this enthusiasm to his pupils. His affability, and his genuine concern and caring for his students is obvious, and he always goes above and beyond to assist those under his tutelage in realizing their utmost potential as artists. Barry Underhill - Lecturer in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University

Hayden is the rare instructor who brings a wealth of real world experience to an academic environment in a way that is both relevant and inspiring. It’s not just his professional knowledge that makes him such an excellent teacher though. It’s his passion that draws others to him. He has somehow managed to cheat time, to maintain the idealism of his youth and temper it with the demands of a very practical world. He is a constant reminder to students (and peers) to hold onto the things that mean the most to us, to never forget our dreams. It is a lesson that through his words and actions, Hayden teaches us all. (Barry managed Hayden indirectly at The Art Institute of Austin)

    Javo Murillo - Filmmaker/Cinematographer

Hayden was one of my favorite professors in my time at the Art Institute of Austin. He's creative, patient, knowledgeable, experienced, respectful, detail-oriented, modest, and most of all he's a very open minded instructor. He keeps updated his knowledge on new cameras, equipment and even new techniques as technology progresses on a constant basis. He respects and acknowledges talent in whatever form it comes and helps students bring out the best attributes of their abilities. He constantly strives to encourage students to follow their dreams, whatever they are, and he's always there when you need to hear an honest opinion about your work. Not only is he an inspiring instructor and filmmaker himself, he's a good and honest person at heart, not to mention the kind of knowledge you get from him with just a conversation.

David Barrow - Owner/Producer Anchor DB Creative

When students are looking for a caring, nurturing, supportive, philosophical instructor - they could not think of a better guide than Hayden. The above characteristics are only a few that help Hayden be successful, knowledgeable, and an artistic instructor. He continually strives to do more research, help out more, showcase more and really explain the nitty gritty details to get to the root of each answer. I have personally learned a lot from Hayden and his pedagogical approach. The Arts Institute was lucky to have him as were the students. (David worked directly with Hayden at The Art Institute of Austin)

Jeffrey Flanagan - Contract Graphic Designer at Snap Kitchen

I rarely get the chance to talk about someone as unique and wholesome as Hayden. He is one of the most talented, dedicated, and conscientious creatives in the industry. I've had the personal privilege of being instructed by him during my college years, and much of what I practice in my own work comes from those experiences. Were I reviewing Hayden as a possible job candidate, I would hire him without hesitation and with the greatest of confidence. One of the impressive qualities that I admire about him is his infinite ability to inspire people. He is genuine in both his work, and with everyone he knows and comes to meet. (Student)

Andrew Pechin - Jr. Graphic Designer at Snap Kitchen

Everything I know about film production I owe to Mr. Yates. I could not be more privileged to have had such an outstanding professor as this man. I learned so much from him, and he constantly pushed his students to succeed. As a student, Mr. Yates challenged us to think outside of the box. He taught us to be our own person, and to think creatively and to be innovative with our work. He constantly provided us with positive criticism and showed us ways to better our work. I sincerely appreciate this man's advice as he has opened my eyes to a world of opportunity and possibilities. (Student)
